Odeon Guitar Trio


The Odeon Guitar Trio is an Australian chamber group that explores the musical connections emerging between Australia, Brazil and other guitar traditions of the world. The trio interprets works from Ravel’s Valses nobles et sentimentales to the vast Brazilian choro repertoire while adding original compositions and arrangements for three guitars. The sound of Odeon is the coming together of each member’s particular area of expertise. Ken Murray is a Classical guitarist specializing in Spanish and Australian music of the modern era; Jaimie Smith focuses on the popular guitar styles of Spain and Brazil such as flamenco and choro; Doug de Vries is a jazz exponent who has worked extensively with choro, samba and bossa nova with a strong emphasis on the Brazilian guitar repertoire.


Ken Murray

Ken Murray is a performer, teacher and composer from Melbourne. He has performed around Australia and toured Portugal, Spain, England and The Netherlands. Ken has a strong commitment to performing contemporary music and is also an active performer of Spanish and South American music. Ken has performed in many ensembles as a guitarist and mandolinist including: Elision, Libra, Re-sound, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra Victoria. Ken is currently working on a PhD in musicology, focusing on the reception of Spanish music in London from 1875-1925. He is a guitar teacher and lecturer at the University of Melbourne, the Melba Conservatorium and Monash University.


Jaimie Smith

Jaimie Smith has had a varied career, performing in a myriad of musical styles and settings. In addition to jazz and Brazilian music, the study of flamenco has been his main focus. He is the Musical Director of the group Sonikete Flamenco and has performed around the country in numerous dance productions (Ayer hoy y manana,Suspiros de la luna),and is currently adapting the traditional Andalucian folk songs of Federico Garcia Lorca to a flamenco setting.


Doug de Vries

Doug de Vries is one of Australia’s best, most experienced and versatile guitarists and composers, excelling in many musical genres from jazz to choro, samba and bossa nova; styles that form the basis of Brazilian popular music, and is considered Australia’s leading exponent of Brazilian guitar repertoire. He is particularly noted for his sophisticated accompaniments, deep knowledge and daring improvisations in jazz or other settings, be it solo guitar or in ensembles.
